For Emmy-nominated make-up artist Billie Gene, his work is mostly about making people feel “alive.” And particularly from the start of their day. Hence, the birth of his eponymous body care brand, Billie Gene Body.

Designed to “uplift mood and build confidence,” Gene’s product line includes fragrance-focused body oils for men and women. Items such as the Millionaire Sex product include a blend of champagne seeds, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, and shea butter. The Girl On Girl offering is infused with sweet and flirty notes of jasmine, mandarin, and pear.

Fresh off the heels of co-hosting a New York Fashion Week event in support of the brand, Gene has his sights set on a bright future, and often harkens back to the seminal words of encouragement that industry legend Donatella Versace once told him: “Whatever you do, be fierce and fearless.”

We caught up with Gene before the fashion week rush, and he shared the backstory on what inspires him, the Versace conversation, and his pathway to success.

BROTHER: How long have you been active in your career? And how many celebrities have you worked with thus far?

BILLIE GENE: I’ve been active in my career for over a decade now. As for how many celebrities I’ve worked with—that’s honestly a question I’ve never been asked before. If I had to guess, I’d say well over 100.

When did you first fall in love with beauty and make-up?

I actually fell in love with fashion first, toward the latter years of high school. My love for beauty followed once I got to college. From early on, I’ve dreamed of a career where I could marry the two worlds seamlessly.

What separates a professional make-up artist from someone who just does it for themselves or for ‘fun?’ And can anyone become a make-up artist?

The difference is really in the word professional. A professional make-up artist brings a high level of professionalism, in addition to skill. Their tools are clean and well-prepared, they understand etiquette, and treat everyone with respect. While anyone can enjoy make-up, becoming a true professional requires discipline, consistency, and accountability.

Who gave you the best career advice when you first started out? And what was it?

Donatella Versace. After a fashion show, she told me, “Whatever you do, be fierce and fearless.” Those simple words have been life-changing. Whenever something feels mid or just okay, I immediately think of ways to make it hotter. And whenever I’m nervous, I close my eyes and just jump out the window!

Why do you think a number of men shy away from grooming or self-care? And what’s an important grooming aspect that Black Men should pay attention to?

I think a lack of knowledge is a big reason why many men shy away from grooming. Men also don’t always realize that grooming needs to be tailored to their lifestyle. Even as a beauty expert, I don’t have the energy for an extensive nighttime routine, so I focus my skincare in the morning because that’s what works best for me.

Where does your inspiration come from? And what led to the development of Billie Gene Body?

My inspiration comes from my heart. I draw from my past, from art and icons, and then I bring it all into the moment. And I create my art based on my feelings. Billie Gene Body was born to make people feel alive. I knew there couldn’t just be another “make-up brand” in the market, so I shifted the focus to body care—the first step in feeling sexy, confident, and powerful. The moment you step out of the shower, you should feel incredible, and this brand is designed to give you that feeling, instantly.
