Confirmed by a press statement from his family, D’Angelo—born Michael Eugene Archer—has passed away at the age of 51.

The pioneering music icon hailed from Richmond, Virginia. He quickly conquered the world of R&B during its height of neo-soul reinvention. Leaving behind a strong legacy of musical contributions, Archer was the recipient of several Grammy awards, industry accolades, and prestige.

Archer’s most notable albums include his 1995 debut “Brown Sugar” and 2000’s acclaimed number one album “Voodoo.” The latter propelled him into music superstardom and won the Grammy for Best R&B Album. It also featured his groundbreaking hit single—and its scintillating music video—“Untitled (How Does It Feel),” which won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

Upon his untimely passing, Archer is survived by a host of family members (not all publicly known), including a daughter, Imani Archer, an emerging musician. And a son—Michael D’Angelo Archer II.—whom he shared with R&B music sensation, Angie Stone. (Sadly, Stone also passed away this year, in March.)

Born on February 11, 1974, Archer died on October 14, 2025, after suffering a long bout of pancreatic cancer.
